David Brooks, New York Times columnist and bestselling author, said about the liberal arts: “College is about exposing students to many things and creating an aphrodisiac atmosphere so that they might fall in lifelong love with a few.” While high performing students typically find themselves choosing pre-professional degrees – medicine, law, commerce, or engineering – I would entreat you to consider at least combining your pre-professional degree with an Arts degree. Here are a couple of reasons why.
Expose yourself to many things
I know that when I graduated from high school, I hadn’t the slightest clue what I wanted to do for my career. Frankly, I had my head too far in my books and the world of extra-curricular activities to shadow any professionals to discern the most suitable career path for me. Even if you are certain you want to pursue a certain degree, I believe that an Arts degree may expose you to knowledge not necessarily applicable to your career, but certainly applicable to your life. You will have the chance to learn about history, literature, economics; how this society functions from multiple angles, not just the discipline of your pre-professional degree.
Fall in lifelong love with a few
The more disciplines you expose yourself to, the more likely you will find what it is you truly love. For me, I discovered a love for philosophy. I found in philosophy, ancient answers to eternal questions about the nature of reality and morality. I loved the logical thinking and methodological writing that philosophy demanded.
