How to prepare for a speech

Giving speeches is just as important as writing eloquently. When executed well, it can boost our self-confidence and make us appear more charismatic.

  1. Do your research and know your content.

This will help you draft a well-developed piece of writing, just like any essay. Then, learn the main ideas of what you’re talking about. This doesn’t mean memorising, because that doesn’t allow you the flexibility to improvise on the spot if you need to. To prevent mind-blanks and emergencies by remembering key points and quotes and using language that is simple yet sophisticated.

  1. Think of your audience.

This will determine how formal or informal you want your speech to be. Remember to include references to the audience throughout your speech, using tools such as rhetorical questions, verbal cues, even puns to engage their interest.

  1. Body language.

Maintain open body language, which means using your hands in harmony with what you’re saying. Stand up straight, and feet shoulder width apart. Use eye contact to engage with each individual rather than scanning the room. Finally, project your voice, and speak at a pace that is not to fast or slow with moderate inclinations.

Good luck!
