Brain Train

Preparing for NAPLAN

The NAPLAN test falls in May, meaning you’ve still got 4 months left to prepare.

It is imperative to understand that NAPLAN is not a content test with routine questions but is rather primarily focused on understanding and problem-solving skills with questions that force you to interpret them. In this sense, it is important to be constantly revising and reinforcing basic skills and fundamentals in all three key areas of the NAPLAN to achieve the highest band.

Numeracy

In the numeracy section, students will be tested on their problem solving and reasoning skills in terms of interpreting patterns and thinking mathematically. It is important teach students by explaining both correct methods to solve problems, but also why other methods may not work in order to build their problem solving and reasoning skills. Using models and real life examples can help students to understand mathematical concepts that make be hard to grasp.

Literacy

Literacy feels like an integral part of everyday life, thus its study at times seems unnecessary. The literacy exam covers grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and reading. It’s important that you are able to identify essential grammatical syntax within a sentence and their role. Familiarise yourself with difficult spelt words, especially from practise exams.

Writing

You will be presented with a stimulus and 40 minutes to create either a narrative or persuasive piece of writing. For narrative form you should revise story techniques such as metaphors, similes, plot, characterisation, whilst for persuasive texts you should be revising persuasive techniques such as high modality language and imperatives to enrich your style of writing. Exposing yourself to various stimuluses will also help you generate ideas better and faster. For those struggling or stressed out with the time limit the best thing to do is to practice writing with a timer and you will find yourself getting better each time.
