Preparing for OC

The Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test (1st of August, 2018) is an annual written examination designed to provide gifted and talented students in Year 4 an opportunity to enter a two-year placement program in Years 5 and 6. OC placement is valuable in helping students optimise their education and unlocking unique talents.

The OC Test consists of 3 components: Reading, Mathematics and General Ability, with 20, 20 and 30 multiple choice questions respectively. These 70 questions form the exam, which is separated into two parts with 35 questions in each. Preparation for the exam does not have to take up a lot of time; we recommend about 1 hour of practice questions a day to foster a consistent study habit.

For the Mathematics component, building upon and solidifying the foundations of addition, subtraction, division and multiplication is a must. Reviewing and practicing questions relating to algebra, patterns and geometry such as the perimeter of 2D shapes is essential. Furthermore, enhancing the student’s ability to analyse graphs, especially reading the title and axes properly, and interpreting the information is also critical.

For the Reading questions, students are asked to extract relevant information from an extract. A tip would be to read the questions first before you read the passage, so you know what information you are looking for. The best method of preparation would be to enhance comprehension skills by completing comprehension-based exams online, and reading short stories.

The third and last component is General Ability. Students must be able to identify and complete pattern sequences, and recognise relationships between objects, shapes and words. Naturally, the skills and logic behind these questions are accumulated from Maths and Comprehension papers. However, completing as many GA practice exams and IQ tests as possible, both online and in Excel books will be most beneficial.
