University Advice

Unsure about what to do after high school..?

Now that you've finished 12 years of schooling, you might be at that stage where you're stuck, and unsure what your next step is. Here are some things you can consider:

Choose a general or broad degree that enables you to specialise.
Generalist degrees (like Commerce, Arts or Science) are a safe choice if you have an interest in a certain field but you aren’t quite sure what career you want to pursue yet. This will allow you to learn more and explore your options without committing to a specific area straight away. Once you decide on an area you want to specialize in you, you can choose a major and hone in on that subject through the latter years of your undergraduate degree and even extend it to your postgraduate degree. You should also consider seeking work experience within those fields such as internships so that you can decide if this career path is really for you.

Testing the waters
If you’re still contemplating on a certain field, but aren’t sure if you want to commit to long term study (3-4 years of study), you can try a lower-level of qualification or applying for apprenticeships. Certificate courses usually run for 6 months to 1 year of full time study and will give you a good feel of what further study will be like. Depending on the qualification and course, it can be credited towards undergraduate study if you actually decide to continue.

Take a gap year
A lot of students are worried that taking a gap year may lead them to be unmotivated to get back into study mode. However, that is not the case! Taking a gap year can give you the opportunity to take a break from studying, and reflect on possible career options. You may use this year to travel, gain work experience, volunteer and build on yourself. You can even take off half a year and commence University in Semester 2.
